Not long ago, I was watching Olympic short track speed skating of the 2002 Salt Lake City games on television. I watched Apolo Anton Ohno, an American favorite in the event, lead in the last laps of the 1000 meters event only to be taken down by a crash involving three other skaters. The only man not involved in the crash, Australia's Steven Bradbury, who had been in fifth place at the time of the crash, crossed the finish line first. Ohno was screwed out of a gold medal because he was taken down by two skaters that tripped up behind him. The abrazo The Nobodies expresses the idea that "the nobodied [are people] screwed every which way." It was these two ideas together that got me thinking about why people get screwed over in the first place and why the same people seem to or claim to get screwed over all he time. There are many things that people can get involved with that often lead to them getting screwed. The government and insurance companies are often blamed for screwing families out of much needed money because of their technicalities and hidden charges. Involvement with an untrustworthy company can cause a person to be screwed out of money and possibly possessions which can cause he or she to be burdened. In the workplace, employees get screwed over when a co-worker steals an idea or receives a promotion over another co-worker who originally thought of the idea or who worked hard or had more seniority to earn the promotion. The most common and often most emotional situtuations of being screwed over occur in the social relationships between people. A member of a dating couple can feel screwed because their partner was unfaithful. Friends betraying friends can leave a person feeling lonely and used. All these examples can lead to people feeling very depressed, unsure, alone and worthless--feeling like a nobody. No matter how or why a person is screwed over, the feelings he or she experiences can leave the person wondering why such a bad thing happened or that he or she gets screwed over in every situation. Why do people get screwed? There may not be an answer. If you believe in such a thing as fate, the idea that everything in life is predetermined and things happen for a reason, it could be an explanation. It is also possible that the person got screwed out of an oppurtunity because a better one will come up for them. Why if people get screwed over once do they start to think that they get screwed over all the time? Streaks of bad breaks can often cause a person to believe that they are unlucky and that no matter what they do they will always be wronged in the end. The truth is that no one gets what they want all the time, but no one is wronged all the time either. Life is filled with its ups and down and someone may be up because he or she screwed you over but there will be a time when that person is down and its your turn to be up. When you feel like a nobody it is important to always keep in mind that things will not be bad forever and will eventually get better.
