One of the religions of Ethiopia is a form of Christianity called The Ethiopian Coptic Church. In our picture the body is being prepared according to the Coptic traditions. The Coptic Church was formed in Egypt. It is unclear when exactly the church was formed. While trying to get more information on the history and beliefs of this sect of Christianity I came across some very interesting thoughts. Every time I entered "Coptic Church" or "Coptic Church in Ethiopia" in a search engine I would get sites that contained references to marijuana and the Bible.
Another interesting fact about the Coptic Church is that the followers of the Coptic Church believe that marijuana is the herb that is consistently referred to in the Bible. According to the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church herb (marijuana) is a Godly creation from the beginning of the world. It is known as the weed of wisdom, angel's food, the tree of life and even the "Wicked Old Ganja Tree." Its purpose in creation is as a fiery sacrifice to be offered to their Redeemer during obligations. They believe that through the use of marijuana one can become closer to God and understand the true meaning of the Bible.
"Due to the persecution of God's church
from the beginning of the Christian era and due to the persecution against
marijuana the true understanding of the Eucharist has remained hidden from
Christendom and the world, only to be revealed in these times, the
culmination of all human history. We of the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church
declare marijuana for the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
and for the resurrection of mankind. The fruits of the mystery are
remembrance of the passions and death of Christ, propitiation for sins,
defense against temptation, and the indwelling of Christ in the faithful.
Preparations for communion consist of confession of sins, fasting from
sin, and reconciliation with all mankind. As such the participant in the
Eucharist will be in a condition in which prayer and meditation are easy
and fruitful. He will find his emotion purified and stimulated, his
spirituality quickened and his heart filled with love."
The Coptic Church maintains its own website, www.copticchurch.com . The Coptic Church operates on a thirteen month calendar as opposed to the thirteen month calendar that most of the world uses. There are Coptic Churches located all over the world not just in Ethiopia and Egypt. There are quite a few in the United States and in Europe.
I found this view very interesting because in the United States marijuana is looked upon as an evil and terrible thing that needs to be outlawed indefinitely. However in these other countries perhaps marijuana is not so terrible. There really have not been any definitive studies done showing the true effects of marijuana on a person's body. Perhaps, as the church suggests marijuana is a good and healthy thing. Or on the other hand it could be worse than anyone ever imagined. There is also a stigma associated with religions that are not well known or that are not "acceptable" or that stem from the basic belief that Christianity straight and simple is the only way to go.
